Funds for Compelling and Innovative Museum Projects

For the fourth year in a row, Balkan Museum Network (BMN) and Cultural Heritage without Borders in BiH (CHwB BiH) are organizing small grants scheme.

✓ If your museum is member of the Balkan Museum Network,
✓ If you want to cooperate with partners (another museum or non-museum organisation),
✓ If you would like to develop your project management capacities,
✓ If you would like to strengthen your service provision and strategic goals…

APPLY for this CALL!

Projects should be within following themes:

1. Access and inclusion of Deaf and disabled people in museums
2. Digitization in museums

Maximum total amount requested can be up to 4.000 EUR. A maximum of four projects would receive the grants. CHwB BiH and BMN keep the right not to award any grant if the quality of proposals is not satisfactory.

To qualify for funding, projects must:

✓Have a maximum duration up to 9 months (implementation period is April – December 2017);
✓ Be a partnership project, involving not just applicant museum but other partners such as another museum, a non-governmental organisation, activists, a community group, an educational institution, artists, disabled people’s associations, journalist and similar;
✓ Involve groups of people (beneficiaries). We will particularly be looking for proposals for events that involve lots of people who work in your museum. This way, we will know that the event is having an impact across the museum;
✓ Show clear evidence of community engagement (where appropriate);
✓ Be at least part-funded from within the museum’s own resources: the museum must contribute at least 20% of the total cost of the project. This could be calculated in terms of staff hours; Explanation: Total project budget is 5.000 EUR. Grant from CHwB / BMN is 4.000 EUR. Museum contributes with 1.000 EUR, which can be an in-kind (non-financial) contribution;
✓ Be an original idea (applicant will need to sign a Declaration of Honour);
✓ Be subject to quality financial reporting – providing copies of all bills of the total amount of the project;
✓ Submit a narrative report in which you would assess if the project was successful and to what extent;
✓ The application must be countersigned by the director of the partner organisation/museum;
✓ The lead applicant must be able to receive the funds in EUR on its bank account. The lead applicant can also be a non-governmental organisation, but the project outputs need to be owned by a museum and the majority of activities have to be in the museum.

Selection procedure

The selection committee will review the received applications based on the criteria outlined in the call. 90% of the grant amount will be given when the proposal is accepted and the grant contract is signed, and the final 10% will be given upon the receipt of a satisfactory narrative and financial reports. Two reports are required: the first is a full budget with all receipts and transactions clearly shown; the second is a two-page summary of the project, detailing its aims, implementation, main outcomes, what you have learned and risk analysis.
BMN undertakes to provide feedback on proposals, working with you, where necessary and where possible, to develop the proposal to bring it up to the required standard to be accepted for funding.

Note that:

✓ Each museum is eligible to receive only one grant, but may submit more than one proposal;
✓ The museum that submits the application is a lead partner and will sign the contract with CHwB BiH;
✓ If you are a lead partner in one project (signing the contract with CHwB BiH) you can be a partner in another project;
✓ Funding allocation will be based on the quality of the proposals, as evaluated by the selection committee;
✓ The language of application is English.

Projects will be monitored by the Cultural Heritage without Borders in Bosnia and Herzegovina (CHwB BiH). Funding is made available by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation through CHwB BiH. Other sources of funding could be sought but the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s contribution has to be greater than 50% of sources of income.
